About Canberra

The site of Canberra was selected for the location of the nation's capital in 1908 as a compromise between rivals Sydney and Melbourne, Australia's two largest cities. It is unusual among Australian cities, being an entirely planned city outside of any state, similar to Washington, D.C. in the United States or Brasília in Brazil. In January, the warmest month, the average high is approximately 28 °C (82 °F); however, in July, the coldest month, the average high is only about 11 °C (52 °F). Frost is common in the winter months.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Canberra

The ACT Jewish Community is the home of both the Orthodox and Progressive Congregations and the epicenter of cultural and educational programs for all Jews in Australia's Bush Capital. Rabbi Meltzer is the ministering Rabbi to the Orthodox Congregation, and the educator and pastoral provider to the ACT Jewish Community. There is also a Chabad house in Canberra, there is a commercial kitchen within the building. In 2011 the population was nearly 800. Demographically the Jewish residents are spread out over the northern and southern suburbs. Canberra Kosher is the only certified Kosher caterer in Canberra and the region.
