What is the holiday of Sukkot? What do Jews celebrate on Sukkot? How do Jews celebrate Sukkot?
The holiday of Sukkot (Succos) is one of the Three Pilgrimage Festivals and takes place in the fall, usually September or October. Sukkot is also called “Chag HaAsif” or the Harvest Festival, marking the harvest season in Israel. The word Sukkot means “huts,” recalling the temporary shelters that Hashem provided for the Jews in the desert.
For seven days, Jews eat meals in the sukkah. Another central mitzvah of Sukkot is the blessing on the four species (arba minim): lulav (palm branch), etrog (citron), hadassim (myrtle), and aravot (willow). The first two days of Sukkot outside of Israel (the first day in Israel) are Yom Tov, with restrictions similar to Shabbat. The intermediate days, Chol Hamoed, are perfect for trips and activities.
Sukkot concludes with Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. This is celebrated as one day in Israel and two days in the Diaspora. These days are also Yom Tov and ideal for a kosher family vacation free of cooking and cleaning.
