About Île-de-France

le-de-France literally "Island of France"), often called the région parisienne ("Paris Region"), contains the city of Paris, and is the most populous of the 18 regions of France. Besides the landmarks of Paris, the region has many important historic sites, including the Palace of Versailles and the Palace of Fontainebleau, as well as the most-visited tourist attraction in France, Disneyland Paris. The Île-de-France was inhabited by the Parisii, a sub-tribe of the Celtic Senones, from around the middle of the 3rd century BC. Clovis the Frank, the first king of the Merovingian dynasty, made the city his capital from 508. As the Frankish domination of Gaul began, there was a gradual immigration by the Franks to Paris and the Parisian Francien dialects were born. The Île-de-France is one of the world's top tourist destinations, with a record 23.6 million hotel arrivals in 2017, and an estimated 50 million visitors in all types of accommodation.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Île-de-France

In the 6th century, a Jewish community thrived in Paris. A synagogue was built on the Ile de la Cite, but was later torn down and a church was erected instead. During the middle ages both Il-de-France and Champagne became centers for Jewish scholarship. After the French Revolution, citizenship was finally granted to the Jews of France. France became a haven for postwar refugees and within 25 years its Jewish population tripled.
