Créteil is a commune in the southeastern suburbs of Paris, France. It is located 11.5 km from the center of Paris. Créteil is the préfecture of the Val-de-Marne department as well as the seat of the Arrondissement of Créteil. Créteil Lake began as a gypsum and gravel quarry. Once the groundwater was reached, forming deep ponds, the quarry was abandoned and allowed to fill with water. The lake area is now a popular recreational site attracting fishermen, boaters, and wind surfers.
The Jewish population of Creteil is thought to be around 23,000 or nearly 25% of the overall population. It is one of the main areas for Jews in and around Paris. Many Jews live in Quartier du Port, which is next to the lake. There are around 10 minyanim in Creteil. There are also another 17 synagogues within 8Km of Creteil. There are 5 kosher restaurants in Creteil, there are other kosher establishments as well, this is down from a few years ago, as the Jewish community has suffered some antisemitic incidents mainly from elements within the local Muslim community.
