A brief description of the Athens Walking Tour

Starting our tour from Syntagma square, next to the parliament building and its famous guards, we head for the Jewish museum. We walk in the alleys of Plaka, passing the ancient Agora, where the ancient Synagogue once was, and heading for the eternal Jewish neighborhoods, Monastiraki, Thissio and Psiri…

Among our walks and stops in the winding alleys of those charming neighbourhoods, you will see the houses and shops and feel the ambience of some of the oldest regions in the city of Athens. You will hear the history of the Jewish population in Athens and Greece and you will see old photographs of the places we visit, making it easy for you to visualize the everyday life of the Greek-Jews, on those very alleys.

SEE the Jewish museum of Athens, both Synagogues of Athens and the head offices of the Jewish community of Athens. The monument of the Holocaust and the only Kosher restaurant of Athens. The Jewish neighborhoods, where the first modern Synagogue was, back in the 19th century and much more. The first antique shop in the flea market. The Jewish family that started the antique dealing in the flea market!! Significant Jewish houses and shops, still present in the heart of the former Jewish quarter. Also important ancient Greek and Roman remains such as the Agora (with the ancient Synagogue), the majestic Panathenaic Stadium, the Ancient Cemetery of Kerameikos (with the city walls), the Arch of Hadrian and much more… Ottoman mosques, Byzantine churches of architectural beauty and even more! Neoclassical masterpieces of the 19th Century such as the Parliament and the Presidential Palace

HEAR  about the Jewish population in Athens from the 1st century BC to the present day. Individual stories of significant Jewish families in Athens. The historic facts and other information about each monument and site that we visit. All about the German occupation and the Shoah (holocaust) in Athens

FEEL
the ambience of the everyday life of the Jewish population in Athens the last 200 years with rich stories, descriptions and original photographs from the beginning of the 20th century

SMELL and TASTE the Sephardic and Mediterranean delicacies of the kosher restaurant “Gostijo”, in the heart of the former Jewish quarter. Or just a nice cup of Greek coffee in the shadow of the Acropolis, with the best view of the Parthenon

“MEET” all the key personalities in the vast Jewish presence in Athens one by one. Bring history to life with the “small portraits”: Stories, Photos and Drawings of the most important figures, somehow connected with the Jewish history in the Eternal City of Athens

WALK through more than 2000 years of Jewish history, countless years of organized civilization. On grounds rich of memories and stories. Where Socrates and Plato one walked, where Pericles spoke his famous funeral oracle, where the first bell rang after the Greek Revolution in 1828. On grounds of great men and glorious actions. Spend a nice morning walking in the areas of Plaka, Thissio, Psirri and Monastiraki, the oldest and prettiest among all neighborhoods of Athens.
