About Avignon

Avignon is a commune in south-eastern France in the department of Vaucluse on the left bank of the Rhône river. Of the 90,194 inhabitants of the city (as of 2011), about 12,000 live in the ancient town centre enclosed by its medieval ramparts. The site of Avignon has been occupied since the Neolithic period as shown by excavations at Rocher des Doms and the Balance district. The name of the city dates back to around the 6th century BC. The first citation of Avignon (Aouen(n)ion) was made by Artemidorus of Ephesus. Avignon has a temperate oceanic climate, with semi mild winters and very warm summers, with moderate rainfall year-round. Four million visitors come annually to visit the city and the region and also for its festival. In 2011 the most popular tourist attraction was the Palais des Papes with 572,972 paying visitors. The annual Festival d'Avignon is the most important cultural event in the city. The official festival attracted 135,800 people in 2012.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Avignon

The first settlement of Jews in Avignon goes back probably to the second century of the common era, a few years after the destruction of Bethar by Hadrian. The former Jewish quarter, known as the "ghetto" was located where the "Balance" quartier lies currently - north of the Place de l'Horloge. The current Synagogue was built to drawings by the architect Joffroy, between 1846 and 1848. It replaced an older Synagogue which was destroyed by fire in 1845. North African Jews brought the Jewish population to 500 in 1960 and to almost 2,000 in 1968. There is a synagogue of mixed rite, Ashkenazi and Sephardi, and various communal and educational institutions. Avignon is the seat of the Consistoire Israélite de Vaucluse, which covers the department comprised of the ancient communities of the Comtat Venaissin – Cavaillon, *Carpentras , and L'Isle-sur-Sorgue (no Jewish population today).
