About Hebron

Hebron is a city located in te Palestinian authorities within area A giving the Palestinian authority full control over it, it is also referred to as H1. At the same time there is a region within Hebron H2 which is under the control of the Israeli authorities. This area which is some 20% of Hebron includes the Me'arat ha-Makhpela the Cave of the Patriarchs. The city has fallen under many different conquerors of the area including, Early Islamic, Crusader, Bizantine, Ottoman, British, Jordanian and Israel. Today 120,000 palestinians live in H1, 700 Israeli Jews and 30,000 Palestinians live in H1.

The history of the Jewish connection with Hebron goes back to the time of Abraham when he buys land to bury Sarah his wife. This is known as Me'arat ha-Makhpela the Cave of the Patriarchs. This gave a focus to Hebron that meant that the city was always the second most important religious site for Jewish people. King David was born here and was annointed King here.
