About Trieste

Trieste is the capital city of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region in northeast Italy. Founded by the Ancient Romans, it stands on the Adriatic coast below the Karst Plateau, a few kilometers from the border with Slovenia. Historic Italian, Austro-Hungarian and Slavic cultural influences are all evident in its layout, which encompasses a medieval old city and a neoclassical Austrian quarter. Trieste was one of the oldest parts of the Habsburg Monarchy. In the 19th century, it was the most important port of one of the Great Powers of Europe. The average temperatures are 5.4 °C (42 °F) in January and 23.3 °C (74 °F) in July. There is a castle, archaelogical sites, museums and art galleries in Trieste.

The oldest official document available mentioning a Jewish settlement in Trieste goes back to the year 1236. After Trieste sided with Austria in 1382, Jewish people from Germany, some subjects to the Austrian Dukes while others to local princes, came to live in Italy. Lacking synagogue and legal recognition, the small Ashkenazic Jewish community held services in a private home from the 15th century. in 1919 immigration swelled Jewish numbers to 6,000 and the Great Synagogue was built. There is a Jewish museum in Trieste and both the Morpurgo Municipal Museum and the Civic Museum paint a picture of the history of Jewish life in Trieste. Today the Jewish Community counts about 600 members. The Jewish community of Trieste today represents the organizational structure of the association of Jewish people living in Trieste, there is a kosher store there.
