West Hempstead is a hamlet and census-designated place in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 18,861 at the 2010 census. West Hempstead is located on Long Island, and is part of Hempstead Township. West Hempstead is 45 minutes away from Manhattan, and only slightly over 30 minutes from Brooklyn. The climate produces hot dry summer and cold wet winters.
There is a vital Jewish population, with a number of Orthodox synagogues as well as a Conservative congregation. Shopping strips with mom-and-pop stores, kosher eateries and Riesterer’s Bakery, founded in 1931 (and now also kosher) line Hempstead Avenue; Hempstead Turnpike offers more shopping.
