Indianapolis is the capital of the U.S. state of Indiana and the county seat of Marion County. With an estimated population of 843,393 in 2013. Several initiatives have been made by the Indianapolis government in recent years to increase Indianapolis's appeal as a destination for arts and culture. Constructed between 2007 and 2013, the Indianapolis Cultural Trail is an urban bike and pedestrian path that connects the city's five downtown Cultural Districts. Indianapolis has many museums, art galleries and monuments. Indianapolis is a major center for automobile racing. Since 1911, the Indianapolis 500 has been the premier event in the National Championship of open wheel car racing. Summers are warm to hot and humid, winters are cold, with an average January temperature of 18.1 °F (−1.1 °C).
