About Rotterdam

Rotterdam is a major port city in the Netherlands' province of South Holland. The Maritime Museum's vintage ships and exhibits trace the city's seafaring history. The 17th-century Delfshaven neighborhood is home to canalside shopping and the Pilgrim Fathers Church, where pilgrims worshiped before sailing to America. After being almost completely reconstructed following WWII, the city is now known for its bold, modern architecture. Nowadays it is home to Europe's largest port and has a population of 630,383 (2014). Rotterdam features some urban architecture projects, nightlife, and many summer festivals celebrating the city's multicultural population and identity, such as the Caribbean-inspired "Summer Carnival", the Dance Parade, Rotterdam 666, the Metropolis pop festival and the World Port days. Rotterdam has many museums. Rotterdam experiences a temperate oceanic climate similar to almost all of the Netherlands.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in Rotterdam

In 1610, the city fathers of Rotterdam issued permits to engage in trade within the city to small number of Portuguese Jewish merchants. The permits guaranteed freedom of worship and the right to build a synagogue and establish a cemetery. At the close of the eighteenth century, 2500 Jews lived in Rotterdam, comprising the largest Jewish population in the Netherlands outside of Amsterdam. WWII: Deportation of Jews from Rotterdam began late in July 1942 and was completed by the end of June 1943. After the war, Jewish life in Rotterdam arose anew with the Lev Jam synagogue as its center. In 1954, a new synagogue was consecrated the A.B.N. Davidsplein. Today, the Jewish community of Rotterdam has over 250 members.
