About Frankfurt

Frankfurt, a central German city on the Main River, is a major financial hub. It's the birthplace of writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, whose home is now the Goethe-Haus museum – which, like much of the city, was destroyed during World War II and rebuilt afterward. The reconstructed Altstadt (Old Town) is home to lively Römerberg Plaza, which hosts an annual Christmas market. Frankfurt has a 2014 population of 717,614 within its administrative boundaries. Major trade fairs include the Frankfurt Motor Show, the world's largest motor show, and the Frankfurt Book Fair, the world's largest book fair. With a large forest, many parks, the Main riverbanks and the two botanical gardens, Frankfurt is considered a "green city": More than 50 percent of the area within the city limits are protected green areas.

Within Frankfurt there are over 7,000 inhabitants were affiliated with the Jewish community, amounting to approximately 1% of the population. The Jewish community has a history dating back to Medieval times and has always ranked among the largest in Germany. Today the Jewish community is culturally and socially well established, enriching city life through the Jewish Adult Education Center (Jüdische Volkshochschule), the Jewish Cultural Festival and a wide variety of events. There are 4 synagogues in Frankfurt, two close to the University in the north and two in the north-east out past the zoo. There is a restaurant located in the Jewish community centre which is to the west of the city centre. All of these places are within 1Km of the centre.
