About East London

The city lies on the Indian Ocean coast, largely between the Buffalo River and the Nahoon River, and hosts the country's only river port. East London today has a population of over 267,000 with over 755,000 in the metropolitan area. Lieutenant John Bailie of the Royal Navy, one of the 1820 Settlers, surveyed the Buffalo River mouth and founded the town in 1836, a memorial on Signal Hill commemorating the event.[6] The city formed around the only river port in South Africa and was originally known as Port Rex. This settlement on the West Bank was the nucleus of the town of East London, which was elevated to city status in 1914. Resorts include: Yellowsands, Glen Eden, Areena, Gonubie, Queensbury Bay, Cintsa West and Cintsa East.

Jewish History, POI & Kosher Establishments in East London

Jews began arriving in East London during the 1870s. The East London Hebrew Congregation (Orthodox) was established in 1901, and the East London Progressive Jewish Congregation in 1956. In the hey-day of the community, which at its height in the mid-1960s numbered some 1200 souls, there was an active Jewish communal life, with Hebrew schools, Zionist and other organizations, regional branches of national bodies, and a country club. Jews have been active in civic affairs, with four serving terms as mayor. While the Jewish population has greatly dwindled since then, the community continues to be served by the two religious congregations, a Chevra Kadisha and a local branch of the Union of Jewish Women, and has a representative on the SA Jewish Board of Deputies.
