Budapest, capital of Hungary, is home to the largest Jewish community in central Europe. Jews frist settled in Hungary during the 13th century and experienced ups and downs throughout their history in Hungary. They enjoyed prosperity in the years leading up to WWI and then experienced a rise in antisemitism in the years following the first world war. There were about 825,000 Jews in Hungary at the time of the German occupation in 1944. There were about 150,000 Jews left in Hungary after World War II with most of them living in Budapest. There are around 100,000 Jews living in Budapest today.
Most of Jewish landmarks and kosher restaurants can be found in Budapest’s Jewish Quarter. There are around 20 operating synagogues in Budapest as well as schools and a University. The Dohany Synagogue is the second largest synagogue in the world. There is also an active Chabad Center, the Keren Or Chabad Synagogue of Budapest. The Chabad Synagogue has daily minyan, Shabbat services and meals, mikvah and classes. The newly renovated Zsilip Synagogue and Jewish Community Center has a synagogue, restaurant, play room, classrooms and exhibits. While there aren’t many kosher restaurant in Budapest, tourists have a number of meat and dairy restaurant options to choose from.
