VISITING THE VENICE GHETTO
How this trip started
We first visited the Ghetto in 1995, on Shabbat. Needless to say, everything
was closed!
However, we did meet a woman from Miami who was shomer shabbot in what I remember was the rabbi’s house on the square. We were traveling with a gentile couple, and I vividly remember the rabbi inviting us into his house to have some wine and kichel, and chat for a while.
After an hour, the woman form Miami was going to return to her hotel (I
remember she had brought an entourage with her, together with all the food they needed, since at that time there was no Kosher food available in the ghetto).She gave us a “mini-tour of the ghetto, and she pointed out the synagogues on our walk back through the ghetto. At that time there were very few Jews living in the ghetto –I remember it was less than 50.
Since then, I have been involved in studying Jewish history and culture
around the world, and when the opportunity to re-visit the ghetto became
possible, I e-mailed the Chabad rabbi to set up a possible visit. And now, as they say, the rest of the story…..
First, a brief history of the Ghetto.
The word “ghetto” is derived from the Venetian word “geto” (pronounced Je-tto) which literally means a metal foundry. Jewish settlements have been in Venice since the 4th and 5th centuries as evidenced by archeological remains. After 1492 , with the expulsion of the Jews from Spain and Portugal, many went to Venice. However, their residence was always precarious owing to the wavering policy of the government in power .Gradually, however, the importance of the Jews in the economy kept Expanding. In March of 1516 a law decreed that that the area where the Jews lived would be called “Ghetto Novo.” , because there was a new foundry there. It had only two entrances by land protected by two large gates, which were locked at night. An older foundry in the “Ghetto Vecchio” was assigned to the Jewish Community in 1541. Finally, in 1633, the “Ghetto Novissimo” (newest ghetto) was added to the mix. The canals, which surround the ghettos, were patrolled by Christian guards (who were paid by the Jews) patrolled the canals, preventing any escapes.
During the 16th century, Jews from different ethnic nations began to
organize in small numbers, each with an autonomous administration, each with their own Rabbi and their own Synagogue. The first one, the German Synagogue, was built in 1528, followed by the Levantine Synagogue in 1531, and then the Levantine synagogue in 1538.The Italian synagogue was built in 1575, and the last of the synagogues, the Spanish synagogue, was built towards the close of the century. The French, Spanish, and German synagogues are all on the second floor, and are interconnected by a secret passage between the synagogues. Today they are not in use (except once a year) and are more of a tourist site.
The other two synagogues, across the town square and are used regularly are The Levantine Synagogue and the Spanish synagogue. We were there on Tisha’be’ov, and the synagogues were not open to the public that day.
The revival of the Jewish ghetto
Today, there are approximately 600 Jews living in Venice, but only 30
live in the ghetto, and another 80 live within a 10 minute walk.
However, the community is very vibrant. There is now a museum, gift shop, a social center where courses are taught in Hebrew and Judaism, together with many cultural events. There are also a Yeshivah a Kosher Restaurant and a Kosher Bakery.
The miniscule number of Jewish residents does not really represent the community. A large number of tourists, both Jewish and non-Jewish, come from all over the world to visit the oldest Ghetto in the world !More info...

A Kosher DIY Guide
A few words before we begin
Rome is famous for her many churches and the treasures hidden within them. Naturally the religious Jewish tourist is confronted with a major issue regarding visiting these sites and usually skips them.
I am not going to decide for you what to do. Everyone should act according to his own feelings.
However, I will not mention any churches in this review. Information can be found in many tour guide books or on the internet.
Because there is so much information to share, I have not mentioned names of the various artists who are responsible for many of Rome's beautiful artifacts. It shouldn't be too difficult to find information about them as well.
This article will attempt to describe Rome's streets, squares and plazas and beautiful sites around the city.
A few important rules
In order to enjoy this town’s many attractions, it's important to keep to a few basic rules:
The best time of year is between May-June or September-October and not in July or August. Bring comfortable shoes because it's always better to walk (public transport isn't bad but watch out for pickpockets). Bring light snacks for the way and plan your meals according to the area that you're touring. There are many Kosher restaurants around the city. It's also a good idea to use the City Map which you can get for free at the tourist information centers or at the hotel. The map covers all the important sites in Rome and is very helpful in planning your tour.
The most important rule is to let your instincts guide you along - simply ‘follow your nose’; Let the city guide you with its special charm, side streets and beautiful alleys…
Important! Plan your day till it gets dark. It's not advisable to walk through some of Rome's side streets during the night. At night keep to the main busy areas, but look out for pickpockets.
Rome is a reasonably safe city and you'll always see policeman walking about, but unfortunately there are many people who make a living from tourists and I don't mean souvenir salesmen….
Recent History
When I arrived for my first time in Rome fifteen years ago, the city was very different from today. Most of the historical sites and beautiful buildings are the same, but the city is far friendlier to the Jewish Kosher eating tourist than it was in the past.
Fifteen years ago there was about 1 and a half Kosher restaurants (that since have closed) and a couple of grocery shops. I remember Coca Cola was sometimes an essential energy supplier and it was also hard to find a Minyan.
Today you can find an abundance of different types of Kosher restaurants in Rome. There are also two Chabad centers and three Shuls with regular Minyanim (as of October 2006). There is also a list of Kosher products so that you can go and shop for food in any supermarket. I suggest you leave all your tinned food at home…

Let's Start:
I will describe a number of places that are worthwhile visiting. You can plan the exact route on your own. Most of the places are not far from one another (the walking distance between the two furthest places is no more than two hours). Use a map but remember to always follow your nose.
The Jewish Ghetto and Trastevere area
The Jewish history of Rome is the longest and most continuous in the whole of Europe. The Jews of ancient Rome enjoyed many privileges. The authorities usually permitted them to practice their religion. When Rome became Christian, the Jews lost all their wealth and were moved to the Jewish Ghetto which was called the Jewish neighborhood (Judaerum Domicili). The Ghetto was situated between the Tiber river and the ancient center of Rome at Via del Portico d'Ottavia. The original size of the Ghetto was no larger than 7 acres.
I highly suggest coming here to the main Shul on Shabat and spend some of the time just walking through the Ghetto alleyways and streets of Trastevere. Try ordering before Shabat, meals from one of the Kosher restaurants in the neighborhood or contact Mrs. Simcha Labi by phone (details in this website). Come again during the week to visit the Jewish museum next to the Shul. In the museum you can find religious articles, 17th – 19th century Megilot, replicas of inscription from Jewish gravestones and papers and documents about the history of Jewish Rome. You can also find material from the time of the Holocaust (the museum should be open every day apart from Shabat and Monday from 10:00-17:00)
In the Ghetto you will also see the church St Angelo in Pescheria where the Jews were brought by force to hear sermons (on Shabbat) and suffered much violence.
The Jewish Ghetto went through many changes and only received its name at the end of the 19th century when all persecutions ceased.
The Coliseum and Arch of Titus
Vespasian started building the coliseum in 72ce. It could seat 55000 spectators who would usually come to watch gladiators fighting. The coliseum has 4 levels. Entrance to the Coliseum is free for the ground level only. Nearby there is a large statue of Nero. In the Coliseum as in many other places during the summer, there will probably be a long queue. It’s worth going first to Palatino hill where you can buy a combined ticket.
Close by is the triumphal arch that is known as the Arch of Titus. This monument represents a painful memorial for the Jewish people but nether the less it is an important historical site worth visiting. The arch was built after Titus’ many victories against the Jews during the Great Rebellion of 70ce in which Jerusalem and the Bet Hamikdash were destroyed. The arch is famous for its relief showing the holy vessels such as the Menorah being taken from the Bet Hamikdash to Rome. Sad but important to see.
Fontana Di Trevi
You have to go and see the Trevi Fountain which is situated in the Piazza de Trevi. This is the most famous of Rome’s water fountains and for a good reason. What makes it special are the many sculpture that decorate it and their positioning in the water, At the bottom of the pool you can see hundreds of coins. The traditional legend holds that if a visitor throws a coin into the fountain he will eventually return to Rome. The place attracts tourists all day and its worth visiting at night as well to see the special way in which the fountain is lit.
Rome’s Piazzas
It’s impossible to ignore the many works of art scattered across the city. Some of the most impressive are the beautifully designed plazas and squares (piazza in Italian). The largest one is the Piazza San Pietro which can be found at the foot of the Vatican. What’s special about this huge Piazza is the many sculpture surrounding it.
Another large piazza is the Piazza Navona which is known as the most romantic squares in town. This oval shaped piazza was built on the ruins of a stadium and has two impressive fountains and tens of marble sculptures. It’s best to come during the evening but art lovers may prefer visiting during the day.
The Spagna Piazza which can be found at the foot of the Spanish steps is an interesting piazza which is always full of tourists, day or night. It is well worth climbing the steps, the view from the top is spectacular and you get a nice perspective of the piazza. During the spring the steps are decorated with flowers. The piazza is situated at the beginning of one of Rome’s main street known for its top fashion designer shops.
One of the most impressive piazzas and my favorite is Piazza Venezia with its large monument in memory of Vittorio Emanuele II the first king of united Italy. On the right hand side of the piazza you can find the 15th century Palazzo Venezia.
Villa Borghese – the gardens and galleries
Villa Borghese can be found in the center of Rome’s second largest park. There is a lot of greenery and a few small lakes which make it an ideal place to escape the bustling city.
It’s a good place to come to if you visiting with young children. There are attractions for young and old such as a zoo that children will probably enjoy more than paintings and other works of art.
In the villa there is a museum with many interesting art exhibits (mainly sculptures). In the park you can find some more museums.
As you tour the city you are bound to encounter many more piazzas, monuments and tourist attractions.

Holland with the Kids
Why Holland? Holland and especially Amsterdam give the Jewish tourist family many options and possibilities for a great vacation; Jewish history – the magnificent Jewish community that used to reside in Holland and the many Shuls still scattered around, Anne Frank's house a memorial of past events. Breath taking scenery, impressive architecture and of course the many rivers cutting through the city. Amsterdam also offers some of the best museums and galleries in the world, amusement parks, attractions for children and no less important Kosher restaurants of every kind and price. (Current information about kosher restaurants, Shuls, Mikvaot etc. can be found on-line at www.totallyjewishtravel.com) Starting with a Jewish Heritage tour... One should dedicate a full day to a "Jewish heritage" tour. The tour is suitable for children and starts with the story of a young Jewish girl by the name of Anne Frank. Anne and her family lived during the holocaust and in order to escape from the Nazis clutches they hid in the attic of her father's office for a long time until they were caught and sent to the death camps. Anne Frank's house is open to the public and is normally full of visitors. It is best to arrive in the morning right after opening. From Anne Frank's house one can take a tram (or even walk) to the building of the Portuguese Shul. The Shul is situated in the old Jewish neighborhood of Amsterdam near Waterloo square. This is a very important tourist attraction and many non-Jews come to visit it as well. The building was finished in 1675 (The sign at the entrance shows the Hebrew date of 1672. This is the year it was supposed to have been finished. There was a three year delay). The Shull survived Nazi occupation. Here is a short story regarding the Shul's history: Many Jews arrived in Portugal after being expelled from Spain in 1492. Very soon they found themselves being prosecuted again and many were forced to convert to Christianity. About a hundred years later the descendants of the Jewish Maranos decided that they wanted to live a normal and safe Jewish life. They realized that they had to leave Portugal and many of them made their way to Amsterdam. At the beginning of the 17th century many Jews started to arrive in Amsterdam from central and Eastern Europe and three main communities were established. In 1639 all of the communities were united to one large community called the "Jewish Portuguese community" even though many of the members were of Ashkenazi origin. The community flourished due to the Dutch tolerance towards Judaism. On the eve of the Second World War, Dutch Jewry numbered 140,000 of which 120,00 lived in Amsterdam. Few managed to escape from the Nazis and about 120,000 were killed during the war. Today the Jewish community in Amsterdam numbers about 25,000. After visiting the Shul it is worth entering the Jewish Museum which is situated right next-door. The museum tells the history of Dutch Jewry and displays artwork, traditional and historical artifacts. During your tour of Amsterdam you can take a refreshing break at one of several kosher restaurants and bakeries in the city (As far as we know there are at least 10 restaurants and bakeries, but this number will change constantly, so please check and reserve your meals in advance!). Great attractions for kids and adults The Dutch tradition and culture offers many interesting attractions. For example the Fishermen's Villages by the North Sea shore. At the village you can find cheese factories (careful, they aren’t Kosher) and wooden shoe factories (which can be found at any fisherman village). These villages have become tourist attractions and are particularly interesting for children. In the city of Delft there is a very developed industry of pottery and ceramic products and there are guided tours of the area. One of the famous factories is the Royal Delft- Koningklijke Porceleyne Fels which can be found at 196 Rotterdamseweg Street. Delft is very close to The Hague and it is worth combining the tour of the city with the suburb Madurodam. Madurodam is a miniature city and displays miniature models of important Dutch sites such as the fishermen villages, picturesque Dutch towns, rivers, windmills and much more. To get to Madurodam take the number 1 or 9 tram, or the number 22 bus from The Hague's central train station. The Efteling amusement park is one of the most famous amusement parks in the whole of Europe. It is built in the center of a fairy tale type forest. The park is near Tilburg close to the border with Belgium. To get there, take the train from Amsterdam to s-Hertogenbosch. From there, there is frequent transportation to the park. If you're traveling by car, drive towards Tilburg. Before you reach the city there are signs pointing in the direction of the park. De Feeling is open till 18:00 and in the summer till 21:00. Amusement park lovers won't want to miss Walibi World. The park is situated 50 km east of Amsterdam in a city called Biddinghuizen. The park features many types of roller coasters and is equipped with the most advanced technology in the world. The Dolphinarium at Harderwijk may not be the most important attraction in Holland, but is a must for sea enthusiasts. The dolphinarium is not far from Amsterdam. It is about an hour and a quarter drive even though the distance is only 40 km. It's important to mention that because of the topography and strict traffic laws in Holland, driving can take much longer than in other places in Europe. The dolphinarium is beautiful and offers many attractions to young and old alike. The address is Strandboulevard Oost 1, Harderwijk. And the phone number is 0341/467467. From Amsterdam take the A1 (E231) south-east for about 40 km. Just before Amersfoort change to the E232 north. This road will take you to Harderwijk. Another important attraction especially if you're going with children is the Keukenhof flower park which is south of Harlem. This impressive and colorful park is the largest flower garden in the world. Another flower park can be found at Aalsmeer not far from Amsterdam. It is best to take the 172 bus from Amsterdam central bus station. One should arrive early as the place is a huge dynamic flower market. There are also many Israeli flower merchants working here. One of the best attractions in Holland is riding down the channels of Amsterdam by boat even though children may loose interest after a while. There are 3 types of rides. A short one (2 hours), medium (4 hours) and a long one (over half a day). For the long ride don't forget to bring food. The meal offered on the boat is not kosher. As you can see there are plenty of things to do as well as to see and I didn't even mention having a nice walk in the beautiful cities, enjoying the worm and welcoming atmosphere...More info...
